Falize

The Falize are a family of French jewellers who were first established in 1840 by Alexis Falize in Paris. He is renowned for incorporating small-scale decorative enamelled plaques in jewels and mounting them in goldsmith’s work during the 1860’s. Along with his son, Lucien Falize, they exposed their work during many years at both the ‘Union Centrale des Beaux Arts appliqués à l’Industrie’ as well as at the ‘Exposition Universelle’. During the latter, in 1878, Lucien was awarded the Grand Prix for his display and subsequently granted the Légion d’Honneur.
Their style was greatly influenced by their exposure to oriental works and led them to adapt motifs drawn from Japanese prints applying them to the ancient process of enamel. They formed a collaboration with Antoine Tard in the creation of these cloisonné enamelled jewels, and were perceived as daring for their innovative designs and bold colours.
During the 1890’s, Falize was a leading supplier to the best known Parisian firms. They are known to have supplied designs to Mauboussin, collaborated with Boucheron and Henri Vever, and formed a temporary partnership with Germain Bapst which saw an increase in their use of gemstones. Their pieces received universal admiration and continue to be highly sought after by collectors around the world today; and although many of them are not signed, the Falize style remains extremely distinct.
